I’ll admit it, I judge a book by its cover. Why? Because the cover gives the reader the utmost incentive to enter the author’s world.  In this book cover project, I was asked to choose an existing book and redesign the jacket to better highlight the meaning of the story. I chose Flannery O'Connor's 1952 novel titled Wise Blood. This is a story that deals with themes of the “Southern Gothic” such as corrupt morality, religion, and the grotesque. To better emphasize these specific themes that are often found in reality, I used found image scans and my own original photography to composite details of the main character in the setting of the novel. I highlighted the grotesque nature of the story through dark, gritty textures and offsetting the title text as well. This project was satisfied through paper collage, Photoshop, and Illustrator.
